NCAT: Asphalt Technology Course

This one-week training program is taught by NCAT for those involved in asphalt construction. Engineers from all sectors of the asphalt industry will gain essential knowledge of asphalt materials and construction practices to build, preserve, and maintain a sustainable highway system.

Goals and Objectives

The purpose of this intensive course is to provide a basic understanding of all phases of asphalt technology. Upon completion, participants will be able to make informed decisions regarding asphalt pavements and communicate effectively with asphalt specialists when needed.

Program Content

This 4.5-day course includes lectures, lab demonstrations (no hands-on), and group discussions on key topics:

  • Asphalt Binders: refining, physical properties, binder testing, and modified asphalt binders
  • Aggregate: aggregate testing and required aggregate properties for high performance
  • Asphalt Mixtures: desirable mix properties, mix types, volumetric design, and performance testing
  • Construction: asphalt plant operations, laydown, compaction, and quality control/assurance
  • Pavement Design & Rehabilitation: design, maintenance, rehabilitation, and recycling strategies

Lab demonstrations cover binder tests, aggregate tests, asphalt mix design (including Superpave), and performance testing.

Materials

Participants receive a copy of the Hot Mix Asphalt Paving Handbook 2000 and a binder with printed PowerPoint presentations for future reference.

Fees, Refunds, & Deadline

The $1,500 registration fee includes the training program, materials, and breaks. Housing, meals, and transportation are not included. Payment must be made at registration. Registration closes two weeks before the course or when full. Cancellations received at least two weeks in advance receive a full refund. No refunds after that date, but substitutions are accepted.

Eligibility

Open to practicing engineers from public and private sectors in the U.S. and abroad, including personnel from DOTs, FHWA, FAA, military, county agencies, consulting firms, material producers, and contractors.

Continuing Education

The course provides 36 Professional Development Hours (PDHs).

Location

This course is held at NCAT's main research facility, 227 Technology Parkway, Auburn, Alabama. Hotels are nearby.
